The Oceanic Series

Oceanic is a series of three large scale works, realised in various materials: high-polish stainless steel and Corten steel. The forms were inspired by watching breaking ocean waves on a stormy day at Kaka Point.
Oceanic 1 is made from a combination of rusted Corten and stainless, and formed the maquette for the subsequent works in the series.
Oceanic 2 is fabricated from highly polished stainless steel. The usual traces of construction – welds, file marks, remnants of heating – are not present. The perfect finish gives an impression of it having come into existence fully formed – an alien artefact.
The material used gives the work chameleon-like characteristics, enabling it to reflect it’s surroundings, playing with light, shadow and appearance/disappearance.
The third piece is made from Corten steel that has been rusted, and continues to change as the patina develop with ongoing exposure to the elements and time.
